Are you not "house -next-to-house" in your area? You look like you're in the country compared to my location. We're so close that when the guy next door sneezes, I have to say "Bless you!" Ha! Ha! Not quite that close, but only TEN FEET house to house! The point is, rats are in the woods everywhere. We call them "wood rats" in the Hudson area. Everyone knows what you're talking about when you say that. They're a normal part of wildlife around there. So, you neighbor should expect them. As a matter of fact, she should worry more about chipmunks.
