Regrowing Scallions

Last month, my cousin Kathy told me about re-growing scallions by putting the white ends in water near a sunny windowsill, I have been telling everyone I know about this amazing trick! It's so easy, everyone has to try it!  It's like a never ending supply of scallions and incredibly sustainable. I love it! My friend Jason happily showed me his bunch of scallions that he re-grew.
He told me that it takes about week in a very sunny window to re-grow all this! This is absolutely the most fun and best experiment ever!  Why have I never known about this before? I can't wait to try to re-grow celery by sticking the bottom crown in soil to try to re-grow it.  Have you every tried it before? Were you successful?

  1. I have scallions in a glass by the kitchen window. I've never done it before and they've only been there about 4-5 days but they are growing.

  2. I am assuming that there is water in the cup. Is that right? How often do you need to change the water?

  3. I'm buying scallions tomorrow for a recipe and will try this too!

  4. I'm so glad you reminded me about this - I totally forgot and just composted some scallion tips! I have more in the fridge, so I'll try this with them.

  5. I am just doing the same thing! I also planted them in the garden last fall - surprisingly, they survive this winter (I live in MA)!
    Do they perennial???

  6. This is an amazing idea. Do you think they could be transplanted outside?

  7. I did the same experiment with green onions. My husband is always buying them to use in his recipes - we we threw some into a glass of water. Within a week, we had more to cut! We eventually potted them in soil - and they are multiplying. Yay!

  8. This is a very effective and cost saving method. I have tried this in the past and was extremely successful. Thank you so much for sharing.

We love to hear from you. Thanks for leaving a comment!
