Forgotten Crocus

When I pulled out the storage box of garden supplies, I saw that I had a bag of crocus bulbs at the bottom of the box. What?!? Argh! I saw that they had sprouted a bit. So, I thought, what if I put these in soil now and try to force them to bloom? Afterall, the basement was pretty chilly all winter long. We shall see if this works.

Writing about gardening seems a bit trivial when there was a devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Watching the news and seeing all the footage is just heartbreaking and tragic. My heart and prayers goes out to the people of Japan.

New Cookie Jar

When we moved into our house a year ago, one of the things we finally were able to do is to have people over and at last not feel so claustrophobic. You see, when we lived in Brooklyn, we lived in a 1 bedroom apartment, and by city standards, it was "spacious" but the kitchen was so small, only 1 person could stand to be in there at one time. I always felt like we were living in a closet! The kitchen was TINY, there wasn't even room to fit a table or anything. So when we bought this place, we finally could entertain without having to sit on each other's lap. (haha just kidding) One evening, we invited my husband's boss and his family over for dinner, and they graciously gave us a Pier One Imports gift card as a house warming gift.  I used the gift card on this lovely cookie jar.  I've been drooling over it for awhile, but didn't want to buy it, so now I had an excuse!  Plus, I had a 10% off coupon, so with the savings, I was able to splurge on two jars! 

Seed Table is Out

I started to sow some seeds this week, so out came the seed table.  The table we use to sow seeds on is a foldable table that we use for parties and barbeques.  I put a plastic tablecloth over the table, I learned that trick from last year.  Last year, I didn't use a tablecloth and I made a mess out of the table with soil and water going all over the place. So far, I only sowed Utah Celery, American Flag Leeks, Hardy Hibiscus, Mesquite Onion, Buttercrunch Lettuce and Early Pearl Cauliflower.  Pretty soon, this entire table will be filled with seedlings.  I can't wait!!

Making this Gardening Chore Less Annoying

I pulled out all the garden pots we used last year out of the storage box and decided to clean them all to get them ready to sow seeds this week.  This is definitely not one of my favorite chores.  If you are re-using pots, it's best to give them a good wash, to remove any debris on the pots that might be harboring bacteria and to prevent from transmitting plant diseases that will cause havoc on your new seedlings.  I am using a baby bottle brush to scrub the pots, this one has a sponge on the tip, and bristles on the bottom.  It's a great little tool to clean out the pots, especially the smaller pots.  I find that using a tool like this makes this chore a lot less annoying.  I cleaned the pots with a little bleach and water, then washed it with dish detergent.  Then I let it air dry before I added starter soil and the seeds.  Sow here we go!
