When we went on our vacation to the family farm I was worried about all the plants in the garden and the indoor plants. We were leaving for 5 days and since we are new to the neighborhood, we didn't want to ask the neighbors to water our garden. I've always seen those commercials of the Aqua Globe that you stick in the containers to water the plants, but being as frugal as I am, I'm not into buying a $10 globe. My neighbor across the street said they use soda bottles, so I started collecting bottles like crazy. LOL.
I put at least 30 bottles all over! If you were my neighbor, you would have thought we were weird to see all those water and soda bottles scattered throughout my yard. But it worked! Check it out, the plants were all alive when we came home. Awesome.
Glad that worked and that you helped the environment by not throwing away all that plastic.
ReplyDeleteThose globes are crap, this is much better! I got a good laugh from the photo but your plants will thank you!
ReplyDeleteI too got a giggle, but I also love this idea. Good for you. I actually have the coolest garden globe here in my office--it's covered with rainbow-mosiac glass, and catches the light. I forget to fill it with water and it's very heavy, but it sure is cheery on a gloomy day.
ReplyDeleteThis really is a great idea.
ReplyDeleteRecycling rocks eh? I also use plastic bottles to cover my seedlings so the bunnies don't munch them down to the soil line anymore. Now I know what to do with my plants when I go on vacation!
ReplyDeleteNice, and you didn't have to spend money on those glass watering devices! ;)
ReplyDeleteAwesome Meems. I have also bee known to bury milk jugs in the ground. I will poke small holes around the edges and fill them occasionally. They will provide a continuous water supply during the dry months.
ReplyDeleteSo, did you leave the lids off, or poke holes in them? I like Frugal Gardener's idea, too.
ReplyDeleteMeemsnyc- Awesome idea. I'm just as frugal as you are. Can't wait to give it a try. I imagined you poked holes in the lids or did you leave them off?
ReplyDeleteHi Sue and Melanie,
ReplyDeleteI took the lids off when I put the bottle upside down, but I guess you can leave the lid on with a hole poked in it. Before I put the bottle in the ground, I gave the plants a really good watering, that way the soil was saturated with water and it didn't need the bottle water until it dried out.
It worked like a charm.
