An Avocado Experiment

I planted this avocado pit just for fun, I'm so amazed how well it's doing.  I just literally took the pit and put it in soil and starting watering it.  It's holding up pretty well in my "greenhouse" aka cold enclosed porch.  It stays around 38F in there.  I'm surprised how healthy the plant looks!  I hope it survives, however it's been my experience that avocado plants don't last very long.

  1. I'd be so excited if they would fruit. I keep thinking I'll try, but there just isn't a great place to put it.

  2. How long did it take to grow that big? I've often wondered if something would grow from the pit.

  3. I love seeing your avocado plant looking so good. I tried the regular way of rooting it in a glass bulb vase and it never got a root, I opened it up and it didn't even have a germ. My husband has one in his office that one of the men started in water and put in dirt and he is bringing it home for me..I will send you a picture of it when I get it if you want.

    Have a really good weekend.

  4. That is the healthiest I have ever seen with produce planting. I have tried a few potatoes, but they were straggly. But that sucker is gorgeous.

  5. Your avocado is doing beautifully. I have never grown an avocado myself so I have no experience with them. I wonder why they don't last very long for you?

  6. I did the same thing last year! I have our avocado indoors right now but will put it outside once the frosts have past!

  8. Funny you should post this. When I was in high school, I planted an avocado pit in my backyard as a joke. Well just like yours, it grew and grew and grew. I moved out before I was able to reap the fruits of my cleverness.

Today, the avocado tree is still standing in my dad's backyard in Hawaii and he harvests the tree each year. He says the fruits are delicious and he often has way more than he can eat so he's able to share with lots of friends and neighbors. If I time my visits home just right, I also get to reap the rewards of yummy avocados! Good luck with your tree!
