Potatoes Sprouted

When the farmer came to visit us in November to help us with the garage, he gave us a big bag of potatoes. We had the bag in the basement, and yesterday when I went to get some to use for dinner, I saw that many of them had grown sprouts!  Yikes.
I Googled to see if it was safe to eat spuds that have sprouts growing on them.  Many of the websites said, "if the potato is firm, it has most of the nutrients intact and can be eaten after removing the sprouted part. However, if the potato is shrunken and wrinkled, it should not be eaten."  I went through and picked out the ones that couldn't be saved and chucked them into the compost.  The others, I made into hash browns.  I have another half of a 10 pound bag to go through, I guess we'll be eating a lot of potatoes this week!

  1. Run to get them out of the compost! Wait about two weeks, then plant them!

  2. I was just going to say the same thing that Annie's Granny said (except I didn't know when to plant them). Do you have the room?

  3. We grew potatoes last year, but in my opinion, it was a waste of space in the garden because each plant produced 3-4 potatoes. Just not worth it when the family farm stocks us with free potatoes every year. :) I rather grow tomatoes.

  5. We luv hashbrowns here. We don't grow potatoes, cause they are usually so cheap.

  6. I agree, I'd rather not waste space in the garden for potatoes. How funny! I was so just going to do a post about my sprouting potatoes! Everything seems to go crazy with the spouting this time of year!

  7. I tried planting sprouted potatoes once, but it was too late in the season. I'd like to try one of those stacked tire potato growers sometime.
