Planning Out New Shrubs and Plants

I'm having a lot of fun with planning out what to plant in the yard and garden for this Spring.  New to our garden this year are 6 peony bushes.  I need to figure out where to put them where they will get ample sun.  I'm a bit hesitant putting them so near to the house, since they attract ants like crazy.  However, since we have lots of large trees near our property, sunshine is at a premium in our yard.  I decided the only place that will work is the side yard. Do you plant your peonies near your house?  If so, does it impose an ant problem?  I'm also planning to order 2 David Austin Rose bushes to add to our rose garden.  I am so excited.  I really adore the ones in Davy's garden and he recommended Chamblee's Rose Nursery which has an amazing selection of David Austin varieties.  I have 4 hybrid tea roses that we planted from bare root last year, and although they are pretty, I really am looking forward to roses that have a nice scent and larger heads and petal count.  What are you excited to plant this season?

  1. I have my peonies near my house and I don't have an ant issue. Your layout looks great! What software did you use? My garden needs a desperate makeover.

  2. We've got peonies and I haven't noticed any ant problems here. Lady bugs and boxelder bugs- yes, ants, no.
We discovered some peonies overgrown in a fence line last summer and moved them. I'm excited to see how they do this year. Some of them were HUGE but weren't flowering because they were in full shade. I'm hoping that they are a different color/shape than the one we've got. We'll see.
This year, I'm excited to be planting another red currant bush and two cranberries. It should be fun.

  4. This is the software I used to make the above plan. I used the Trial version, I recommend using the trial first before you buy the full version. http://www.smallblueprinter.com/garden/

  5. First I have to admit that your post about Peonies warm my heart. My Great Aunt Mary had several varieties growing on our family property. When I purchased my home, I was thrilled to discover two Peonies growing in separate gardens on the property. One is near the house and although ants frequent the blooms, they pose no problems to the house.

Ants are actually attracted to the sweet wax coating on the bud. If you are cutting blooms to bring inside, just swish them through some water so you won’t bring the ants inside. They do no harm to the plants themselves.

  8. I can't remember who had a post on peonies recently. I'm thinking they said peonies don't cause ants to come inside a house.

I like your plans. I'm not organized enough to do something like that. I like to move pots around until I like what I have, and then plant. My yard isn't very big, though, so maybe I would do things differently if I had a larger space to plant.

Our weather is supposed to be cold for at least a week. I am ready to go out and cut back my perennials as soon as it gets warm enough.

  10. Checked out the software - it is worth the $24 in your opinion? I really need to landscape the front and side of our house. it's a nightmare!

  11. @Garden Hoard, Yes, the software in my opinion is worth the $24. However, I did not buy it because it only has a PC version. I use a Mac and it doesn't have a Mac version right now. You can test it out with their online version. The online version doesn't save though, so I took a screenshot to save what I did. http://www.smallblueprinter.com/garden/planner.html
