My only ones

The temperature has dropped to the mid 70s and the pole beans are loving it. They have been growing like crazy! Thank goodness because these pole bean plants were in the ground since early April and they were slow to produce with the relentless summer heat. This is what we harvested this past week. We also pulled the last of the potatoes and I rescued the one and only eggplant left. It wasn't ready to be picked but I didn't want the squirrel to get at it.
I also harvested the only 2 yellow pear tomatos that grew from the 6 plants we put in the ground. The sun followed by lack of rain fried these poor tomato plants and 5 of the plants died before even having a chance to set fruit. (sigh). The yellow pear tomatoes were delicious. I guess quality over quantity. Yeah... okay. I took this photo with the little eggplant next to the tomatoes so you could see how tiny the eggplant was. Better than the squirrel eating it right? I'll take it!!

See what others are harvesting at Daphne's Dandelions.

  1. My dad used to grow little yellow tomatoes years ago. They were sure yummy. Thanks for reminding me of them.

What are your plans for the little eggplant? I'm interested it what you will make with it.

  2. That's amazing that your pole beans lived that long! I only get about 6 weeks of picking here and they fizzle out and are eaten by bugs and sunburned LOL

  3. Those darn squirrels! One year they ate my whole raspberry harvest before I got to them!!!

What a cute little eggplant! I'm just harvesting some of mine. I was curious like Lindalou... what you would do with it!

  5. I'm also impressed by how long your beans have been 'active'. Sorry about your tomatoes. Better luck next year. Not sure if I will grow yellow pear again. IMHO, it's not the sweetest juiciest yellow out there but it sure is pretty !

  6. I love yellow pear tomatoes. We're growing an heirloom Beam's Yellow Pear this year that just won't stop making fruit. One of the best varieties we've grown here. I'm sorry your other tomato plants didn't make it, but it's worth trying again next year. Perhaps the weather will be more cooperative next time. On the upside, your tomatoes make the eggplant look huge!

  7. How awesome that your bean plants held out for good weather again! Did you have any problems with cucumber or bean beetles in your garden? They would not let my bean plants grow for more than a few weeks. Sorry to hear that your pear tomatoes weren't more productive, but at least you got a couple of beauties! I'm still waiting for my jelly bean tomatoes to ripen. They seem to be taking forever, even longer than regular sized tomatoes.

  8. I saw a squirrel outside trying to snag a tomato off of the vine, and I shot out of the back door screaming at it. I'm sorry about your bad luck with those pests!

I wonder how the eggplant will taste. I picked a cucumber that was smaller than it should have been, but it still tasted yummy, so I hope you have the same luck with your eggplant!

  12. I picked my one and only butternut squash this year just a tad early. I agree better than the varmints getting it. I've netted my cucumbers though, so hopefully the squirrels will leave them alone for a while.

  13. I'm glad I don't have squirrels, the rats, moles, voles, and gophers are bad enough company. :-) The tomatoes are pretty, but I agree with miss m, the yellow pears are a bit blah for my taste. Congrats on the beautiful eggplant, good stuff!
