Back in June, I wrote about how we had quite a few volunteer plants growing all around our edible garden. I didn't have the heart to kill any of them. That's how I have 75 tomato plants in the garden. I let the volunteers grow or if it was in a weird spot, I replanted the plants in the parts of the garden which I thought they belonged. If it looked like a squash or cuke plant, I planted it in their respective beds. Then at work the other day, I got a text message from my husband and he said, "We have a giant cucumber growing in the cuke bed" and sent me this photo. I giggled and immediately texted him back. "Well..." I said, "you put a 2x4 underneath it? Um, I think it might be a watermelon." I'm not really sure what it is. I think the seed came from the compost we used from my dad's garden. I'm guessing it's some kind of melon or squash? What do you think it is. It's about 8 inches long right now.
I have no idea. I'd go with something in the squash family. How fun to have volunteers goodies all around your garden. It's almost like a game of hide and seek.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you have 75 tomato plants - wow! As for your pic -- I'm not sure. I don't grow squash so I don't know if they have that striping. I'd say it was a watermelon.
ReplyDeleteI'd go with some type of squash as well. Some Spaghetti squash look like that and then loose their stripes and turn color. It will be fun to see what it is.
ReplyDeleteI am guessing squash...but it would be neat if it turned out to be a watermelon!!! How fun!
ReplyDeleteIt could be a watermelon but my first thought was some sort of Asian melon. Does your Dad grow specialty Asain melons?
ReplyDeleteIt's probably zucchini.
ReplyDeleteIt is some kind of squash. It is not a watermelon.
ReplyDeleteMelons and watermelons usually have cut-out leaves that vaguely look like lacy hands. If the leaves are run-of-the-mill squash leaves or slightly rounder, than it is probably just a squash or a gourd. Or it could be a cross.
ReplyDeleteWhatever it is, I hope it's tasty!
I know what it is. It will grow to about three metres in length and then it will split, and thousands of lime-green spiders will spill out and consume the flesh of children, turning the earth into a quiet and manicured paradise.
ReplyDeleteWho cares, just eat it!
Love volunteers in the garden! It does look a bit like a watermelon but I do agree it probably is a squash, how exciting!
ReplyDeleteI have no idea but I can tell you I'm having exactly the same problem in my garden - Surprise squashes! YOu don't know till you crack it open.
ReplyDeleteLooks like the striped zuchinni squash I planted.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a squash. It's green w/light stripes, w/little dots in between the stripes, also, melons have a thinner stalk too.
ReplyDeleteDebbie
It is a squash, I was just given one by my neighbor who is from Mexico, she said they are a type of Mexican squash, but it also looked like a cushaw squash.. I'm so confused. Did you ever figure out what it was?
