What's Wrong With This Picture?

This is our peach tree. Can you see what's wrong with this photo?  Take a good look.
Here's a closeup of the tree.  See it now?  If you can't tell, check out what the tree used to look like here.
Give up?  I'll show you a hint.  Note: I didn't take a bite out of this.  We found this on the ground.
Stupid squirrels ate all the peaches off our tree.  And we had at least 30 peaches growing.  ARGH!!!  In efforts to save the last 2 peaches, we put netting all around them.  LOL.  Pathetic, I know, but we have never tasted a ripe peach off this tree yet!  Last year, this happened to our peach tree.
Even though we covered the last two peaches in netting, the very next day, we saw that the last two peaches were gone!  WTF!!  How the squirrels were able to figure there way through the netting and take the remaining peaches, I have no idea.  SO. VERY. ANNOYED!!
I suppose that means no peaches for us at all this year.  I feel like crying.  What a complete bummer.  Do you have a squirrels eating your fruits or vegetables?  How do you prevent them from eating your entire harvest?  Help!!!  I need some serious advice!  My dad keeps telling me about this device that you plug it that makes a low frequency noise to scare away squirrels.  Have you used this before, and does it even work?  Ugh.

  1. We have squirrels all over our neighborhood EXCEPT for my backyard. You know why? I've got an outdoor-only garden cat. This might not be an option for you but I tell you it works. The squirrels don't even bother because they know they'd be toast. I'm sorry about your peaches. I'd be devastated too. This is just heartbreaking.

  2. We're indoor kitties so we don't have any advice. Fresh peaches are wonderful so we can feel your pain!

  4. I agree with Grace; our farm cat handles a lot of issues we'd have with rodents, but she can't handle it all. We have noticed this year, for the first time ever, some of our apples are getting pecked right on the tree. PERFECT APPLES almost ripe and the dang birds and ruining them :( Since are orchard is so large, we don't have a lot of options. But you might try the device you plug in the beeps. My dad put one is his garage because he was having an issue with some rodents and ever since he plugged it in - no issues!

  6. Oh gosh! That is hearbreaking!! Thankfully, we don't have squirrels here, but everything else(: Maybe you could try tying the net at the bottom of the tree, that way they couldn't get in from below. That was my first thought, when I saw your netting.

  7. You'll probably have to build a wire cage around it.....

  8. Two words.

    Squirrel pie.

    Enough said!

  9. Squirrel pie or sausages... Did you know that it is legal in the UK to hunt gray squirrels?
I don't really have a squirrel problem since whatever they eat tends to be stuff I don't really care for, however, at my mum's there are tons of squirrel: her strategy is to put out lots of bird feeders and bird baths. None of them are squirrel-proof, so the critters have a feast and leave everything else pretty much alone.
Whatever you do, do not trap them and move them away. You would separate them from their winter stores, and they would end up starving over the winter.

  10. UGH!!!! Stupid squirrels. They really ruin everything, don't they?! They like to dig up my tulip bulbs and take a bite--and *leave* them. To taunt me. Horrid creatures. I hope next year you can figure out a way to keep them from your peaches. I finally discovered that planting my bulbs in a chicken wire "cage" squirrel-proofed them. Maybe you could rig something with chicken wire?

  11. Perhaps the squirrels heard the song 'Peaches' and took to heart the part about 'millions of peaches, peaches for me, millions of peaches, peaches for free'. They were happy, but how very sad for all of you who were waiting for those peaches!

  12. aw, that stinks. I just had some of my dad's peaches - yum. OK, I'm just saying. I'm really not trying to rub it in!!

I had one of those high freq things for bugs once, it did nothing.

  13. This is the first year for our peach tree to bloom - the frost came in 2 nights ago and killed all of the blooms! :( Hopefully we'll have peaches next year.
