Different Size Tomatoes

When I go out into the garden, I've been picking the tomatoes that are starting to get a blush of color. What I noticed on the Romas is that some of the smaller Romas are turning red so fast? They are not even full size yet. While the larger ones are taking its time. Look at the difference in size in these tomatoes. Any idea what is causing this?

  1. My GUESS is that it has something to do with the watering.

    Mine do the same thing.

Luckily we've had rain every day since Saturday and it's suppose to rain again today. But then turn to the 100's for the weekend.....

  2. I've been wondering the same thing, too, not just about tomatoes, but also cucumbers. I can't figure out if I'm supposed to wait for a certain size, or just a certain shade of the right color. With tomatoes, I guess we can also go by the "feel" of the tomato. Is there a reason why you are picking tomatoes that are starting to get a blush of color, instead of waiting for them to fully ripen on the vine?

  3. I sure have gotten behind! I'm not sure why tomatoes ripen at different sizes.

You can wait and let tomatoes ripen on the vine, but if you find bites taken out of them from birds, then you may want to beat them to the tomatoes.

Thyme2garden, you can harvest cucumbers at any size, but they are best before they get large enough for the seeds to develop.

We love to hear from you. Thanks for leaving a comment!
