Biggest bird I've ever seen in my backyard...Ever!

The other day, my husband was outside in the yard, doing some weedwacking. My cellphone rings, and he's on the line. "Honey, look at the driveway, but don't make any noise." Okay, I said, a bit worried. I peer out the window, and I see this gigantic bird. "Whoa, what is that?" I said? Okay, I know I live on an island, but I live on Staten Island, not some tropical paradise, so to see a bird like this, it's totally rare. My husband said it looks like a heron. I've only seen herons in Florida. When he came back into the house, he did a Google search, and we saw pictures of blue herons. This bird looks like a baby blue heron! On further research, apparently there is a Blue Heron Park right in Staten Island about 5 miles from our house. It's a wildlife sanctuary with lots of ponds, and home to some blue herons. How cool is that? http://www.nycgovparks.org/parks/blueheronpark
I hope to see this bird often in our yard!

  1. How exciting for you. That's too funny that he called ya, that being the only way to let ya know the bird was there. Glad you were quick with the camera.
We had a herd of elk crossing our driveway once and it just made my husband sick that he couldn't honk to get my attention for pictures. They would have scattered so fast if he would have. And from what I've heard they might have stomped right over his vehicle! LOL

  2. How exciting. I wonder if you will get a few more herons visiting this summer -- on day trips from their home.

  3. It certainly does look like a baby blue heron. I believe that they all live near water and eat fish. Every year in July when we go to the lake, there are two that stay in our little cove area near our site.

  4. Yup, that's a heron! One landed on my neighbour's roof once. They are such beautiful birds, usually they are in pairs in the wild.

  5. Very cool! I've never seen a bird like that in the Northeast.

  6. We used to have a Blue Heron nesting near us, down by the river. It was always exciting to see him when I went walking. I haven't seen him now for a couple of years, so humans probably drove him out of his habitat. We do see a lot of white pelicans now, and those things are huge. They used to be a rarity here, but my daughter got a picture of about forty of them on July 4th.

The most surprising bird I've had here, was a male peacock looking in my front window! He had his tail feathers fanned out, and was strutting up and down my front porch. Later I heard a noise on our roof, and the female was up there. Peacocks are not native to this area!

  8. This doesn't look like the blue herons we have here in Florida, or at least not at my house. I am unfortunately not glad to see them. Most times they are stalking my Koi and a few times I have seen them flying away with a catch. I've had to protect the pond from these guys. But I do love to see them at the beach or other places, just not at my pond.

  9. Wow, what a visitor to your garden. I'm glad you got a photo of it. I love to watch the herons down by the bay where I live.

  10. How wonderful to have this visitor. Did he ever return? He's very, very cute.

  11. I'm going to suggest that this was either a juvenile green heron or a juvenile black-crowned night heron. Hard to tell from the photo. Either way, that's very exciting!
