The last few tomatoes of the season have been enjoyed by the backyard squirrels. The other day, when I was outside watering the garden, I came across this. Don't you just love how the squirrel uses our fence as it's personal food storage area?
What the hell?
I haven't harvested tomatoes in weeks because they all have bite marks on them. Grrrr. They are so lucky it's the end of the season and that I don't care anymore about the remaining fruits.
I still can't get over the squirrel eating tomatoes. I just showed my husband your post and had to ask him to make sure that I wasn't mistaken about ours never doing this. It seems so insulting for them to mock you that way by leaving it so you are sure to see it...very strange indeed. I feel bad for you about this and really can't think of what you might do to stop them. Hmm.
ReplyDeleteI just Googled 'squirrels eating tomatoes', it is great, you need to go there and read the comments people have left, I didn't have time to read all but I think it will help. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteWe have squirrels racing across our back fence all day long, but they never eat anything from the garden. Maybe it's because of the bountiful walnuts on the trees next door. My big problem is volunteer walnut trees everywhere, because they bury the nuts in my yard and garden.
ReplyDeleteA lady I worked with had to build a walk in cage around hers.... That's the only way she had of getting any from the squirrels in her neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteOh wow. I have a cat that eats my tomatoes but he bites them on the side that is not visable and leaves them on the vine. So when I go to grab the seemingly ripe tomato, I grab a pile of goo. Ick.
ReplyDeleteI just learned this past week that squirrels eat tomatoes from another blogger. Who would have thought. We have squirrels on our streets by the hundreds. Black and grey ones. The black ones came from Canada. I get this image of them hopping the ferries or hitchhiking the bridges. But never have I seen them eat or steal my tomatoes.Must be a cultural thing for squirrels. Ha, Ha. Liked your post.
ReplyDeleteSorry about the squirrels. Don't you wish they would just eat the whole damn thing, instead of leaving half of it just to torment you. Of course, not eating them at all would be best.
ReplyDeleteChipmunks and squirrels used to chew on my tomatoes and strawberries - for the moisture. Now I leave a pan of water down for them, keep it filled and I've not had any problems for years. It's become quite the watering hole for them and some of the birds prefer the ones on the ground too. Good luck. :-D
ReplyDeleteI hate when I go to pick a tomato and my fingers sink into a gooey, rodent-drool filled hole in the back. eeewww.
