A Place Johnny Appleseed Would Love

This is my last post about New Paltz. We were only there for 2 days, but we packed in the activities! On our last day there, we went apple picking with some friends and Grammie. We go apple picking every year. In upstate New York, there is no shortage of apple farms, especially near New Paltz. Where there are orchards everywhere! This year, we went to Maynard Farms orchard which is a vast farm 15 miles North of New Paltz in Ulster Park. This orchard was beautiful. Here is the hubs (on the right) walking ahead of us with his best friend. They were engrossed in conversation and had gone so far ahead of us!
I was so loving all the apples on the trees. This is the first time that we went apple picking early in the season, so we had our pick of the apples. Usually when we go, it's mid-October and the trees usually look bare and really picked through. I really got a kick of how full the trees were!
This was our first time at this farm, and the only thing that bummed me out was that the trees weren't labeled clearly. So, I have no idea what kind of tree this was. By the look of it, I think it was a Golden Delicious.
On one tree we spied an apple blossom. Oh my, the scent was intoxicating! It smelled so sweet, so fresh!  I immediately turned to my husband and said, "we have got to get apple trees!" I really want to get the colonnade apple trees that I've seen on the blog Garden Now, Think Later.
On the farm was a chunk of land that was solely for growing pumpkins. My jaw practically dropped, I couldn't believe how many plants they had! Just amazing.  (Bigify the photo, you'll see why I was amazed.)
Unfortunately, the pumpkins were still green. We'll have to come back next month to pick one up!

  2. I have not picked apples since living in New Zealand over 30 years ago. Thanks for stopping by Keewee's Garden. Yes, I do have my garden set up with a watering system on a timer, so I don't have to bother my friend to come over and water for me.

  3. Wow! Love to see those ample red apples on the trees. I have only gone apple picking once and it must have been almost 2 decades ago!
